Submission

Scribbled by Darrell Barnes

Had a talk with a friend today about the Woman's Program at Denton Bible Church. We got to talking about the fact that during the 9 months in the program, the women aren't allowed to do certain things such as drink. I was reminded of the "early years" at The Village(I'm referring to the 1st couple of years that I was at the Village), and the group that I hung with. When the topic of alcohol amongst Christians, and it came up a lot for some reason, there were 2 different arguments; one argued that Christians shouldn't drink around each other people because they wouldn't appear to be above reproach, while the other argued against this person with scripture. Though scripture is awesome, the scripture used was way out of context to be used in this situation. I shared this with my friend today, and she told me that the reason why the women in the program didn't drink wasn't just because they were told not to. It was a way to show that these things (alcohol, man, etc.) didn't control them.

This got me thinking about the things that I allow to creep in and take control of me at times. What am I holding onto so hard that doesn't allow me to submit to Christ? For the longest time now, I've been thinking that Denton is where I want to be for the rest of my life. I have bought into wanting to stay because the Village is here and I love serving and walking with this family. However, can even this be something that I am not submitting? Do I honestly believe that God couldn't provide everything without the Village? Heh, what a foolish idea.

I encourage you to examine your life...even better ask God to search you, and find out what things you are not able to submit. Pray for the Lord to make you submit these things to Him, because I know that every time I attempt to submit anything myself, I fail...horribly. It's only by the grace of God that we are able to turn anything over to Him.

On a lighter note, I had a great time with some friends last night. We had a crew of about 8-12 people over at my house. Taylor made some Chicken n' Dumplings, while Hillary made a Gingerbread Apple Upside Down Cake. After dinner, we watched "The Christmas Story," which surprisingly was new to 4 people in the room, followed by "Home Alone." It was such an incredible time of building community with each other, and I am so thankful for the many friends I have.

Mr. Barnes I miss you. I like catching up with you via blog, but we all need a REAL, face-to-face, catch-up time SOON!
